Thomas Story, Executive General Manager
Tom was appointed the Executive General Manager for AUSTRAC in October 2006. In this role, he has executive responsibility for day-to-day operations of AUSTRAC and is deputy Chief Executive Officer.
Tom worked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC from 2004 to 2006, where he was an advisor on revenue administration. He was Chief Revenue Advisor to the Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan in 2003-04 and advisor for the IMF to establish the revenue system in East Timor in 2000-01.
Tom was Assistant Commissioner of Taxation in the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) between 1989 and 1996 and again from 2001 to 2003. While at the ATO, his portfolio of executive responsibilities included the introduction of the tax file number system, the modernisation of the audit function, the introduction of the high-wealth individuals initiative and national debt and lodgement operations. His wider corporate management experience includes a directorship with the Australian Health Management group of companies between 1991 and 1998 and serving as National Director of Caritas Australia between 1996 and 2000.
Tom holds the degrees of Bachelor of Economics and Master of Public Administration. He is a Fellow of CPA Australia and remains a consultant to the IMF Panel of Fiscal Experts.
